El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve
Closest Major City: Half Moon Bay
Distance: 36.00 miles (57.92 KM)
Description: This place is awesome. Probably one of the best areas to ride in the whole bay area. Thirty-six miles of multi-use trails are available for your exploration at this 2,821-acre preserve. A popular loop route begins at the Skeggs Point trailhead and the head waters of El Corte de Madera Creek. The vegetation changes from a mixed evergreen forest to predominantly redwood forest as you descend into the preserve. This area has everything from hard-pack fire roads to very rutty fire roads to wonderfull single track. But watch out because there can be many surprises on the many trails, especially the single track. These include very narrow sections w/ big rocks, roots, ruts, switchbacks, cliffs and so forth so proceed w/ some caution. Also when you start out on the most popular trailheads witch start out at the top of the mountain (like Skeggs Point) its just a twisty drop all the way down and can be a long climb back out, so grab a map at the entrance.
Directions to the trail: From 101 or 280 exit on 92 west towards Half Moon Bay. When you get to Skyline turn left and drive roughly about 5-7 miles. Skeggs Point will be to your left and there will be a small parking lot. you can't miss it. (you'll usually see a bunch of mountian bikers in the lot) Across the street and a little way down you will find the entrance to the trails.
