Description: "Abandoned railline with some developed sections which starts at Portland and ends in Pomfret. In Salmon River Park area (go left (west) on rail bridge in park), 2 viaducts 60 to 100' high and over 1000' long. Vistas great. Numerous side trails used by logging operations, trail bikes, etc. In Colchester area, north trails lead to old logging community with stone foundations in center if village. Side trails range from weekend warrior to advanced. Side rail line near Willimantic goes to Hop Brook and Bolton Notch Parks. When off trail, watch orientation as you can become disoriented and travel in loops without doubling back. Side trails are not marked. Directions to the trail: Air Line accessible in several cities. At intersection of Routes 66 and 16, parking lot across from package store. Cross Route 66 at bridge. Go down Bank. Route 16 to Salmon River State Park. Park in area of railroad bridge. Head west to go to viaducts. Intersection of Routes 66 and 85, go south on 85. Parking area adjacent to lumber yard. Head east across Route 85 for technical side trails.
